pelvic floor rehabilitation

The pelvic floor muscles, consisting of the muscles in the interior and bottom of the pelvis, are very important both for men and women. There are instances in life that can lead to a weakening, loss of feeling or loss of control of these muscles, for example during menopause or andropause, during pregnancy, while giving birth, postpartum, in cases of prolapse, chronic pelvic pain or post-prostatectomy. The loss of bladder control or the inability to control bowel movements (urinary or fecal incontinence) can also occur due to loss of pelvic muscle tone. Uro-gynecological rehabilitation, also known as pelvic floor rehabilitation, focuses on pelvic health and increases your knowledge and control of your perineum, helping you prevent, alleviate or improve these conditions. Our physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic downtown Lugano is specialized in pelvlic floor rehabilitation.

Following a medical diagnosis and a physiotherapeutic evaluation, rehabilitation protocols can be considered, which range from:

___

  • Active exercises: contraction and relaxation of the pelvic muscles, improving tone, strength and awareness of one's perineum
  • Electro-stimulation: stimulation of the pelvic muscles through a passive system that uses probes or electrodes
  • Biofeedback: monitoring of the contraction and relaxation phases through a unit used to improve the patient's perception and perform the proposed exercises correctly in clinic and even at home
  • TENS: pain-free electrical current which uses external probes or electrodes to relieve chronic pain and enable the stimulation of sensitive/nervous fibers
  • TTNS: fain-free electrical current which uses external electrodes to enable the recovery of the peripheral and central nervous system

Our multilingual electrostimulation and biofeedback system features a LCD screen with voice prompts, and allows therapists to treat bladder control problems both in women and in men. The unit is also ideal for non-medical programmes for pelvic floor warm up, work out, endurance, vascularisation and coordination improvement, as well as muscle toning and relaxation. The unit's bluetooth connectvitiy and computer software allows the therapist to produce and print explanatory reports on patient progress, analyzing average readings on work/rest, peak, onset and muscle release times, work and rest deviations and the average electrical current.

Indications: urinary or faecal incontinence, mixed incontinence, urge incontinence, stress incontinence, loss of sensitivity, bladder instability, pelvic floor stimulation, posterior tibial nerve stimulation, pelvic floor relaxation, chronic pelvic pain, abdominal diastasis
